19:11 “ ‘You must
not steal, you must not tell lies, and you must not deal falsely with your
fellow citizen. (NET)
19:11 A
society that did not respect the property of others would quickly fall apart
internally. To steal was prohibited (Exod 20:15), and those who would deceive
or cheat were required to present a guilt offering (see 6:2–7).
19:11–13
Do not steal. The eighth commandment (Exod 20:15). There are multiple
ways to “steal,” whether by lying, deceiving, giving a false oath, fraud,
robbery, or holding back someone’s wages overnight when they needed them for
their daily provisions.
Dear Heavenly Father, I come before you today with a heart full
of gratitude. Thank you for revealing to me the importance of living a life of
integrity and for prohibiting all forms of stealing. Help me to remain
steadfast in my pursuit of a chaste life, and to contribute to the building of
a holy community around me. I ask all of this in the precious name of Jesus,
Amen.
"Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 20:9 Six days you
shall labor and do all your work, 20:10 일곱째날은네하나님여호와의안식일인즉너나네아들이나네딸이나네남종이나네여종이나네가축이나네문안에머무는객이라도아무일도하지말라20:10 but the
seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work,
neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor
your animals, nor the alien within your gates. 20:11 For in six
days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them,
but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day
and made it holy.
20:8 Remember the Sabbath day. The OT
Sabbath was the seventh day of the week. Keeping that day holy meant setting it
apart and making it different from other days. No one was to work. Instead,
they were to use it as a time of rest from normal activity and to worship and
honor God. Their focus was to be on spiritual and eternal things (vv. 9–11; cf.
Ge 2:2–3; Isa 58:13–14). (1) The Israelites were expected to follow the example
God himself set when he rested after six days of creation (v. 11; Ge 2:2–3).
God set this day aside for our own good, to provide a day of spiritual, mental
and physical refreshment. (2) The Sabbath was a sign that they belonged to God
(31:13). (3) It also reminded them of their miraculous rescue from slavery in
Egypt (Dt 5:15; see Mt 12:1, note).

20:12 "Honor
your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD
your God is giving you.
Honor your father and your mother: The term honor means “to treat with
significance.” It is the opposite of in
vain (v. 7). Care of one’s elderly parents was a basic element of social
responsibility and godly piety in Israel. Here it is tied directly to how a
person would fare in the land. People
who were faithless to God in disregarding their parents would not last long in
the new Promised Land.
5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the
LORD, your God, am a jealous God, responding to the transgression of fathers by
dealing with children to the third and fourth generations of those who reject
6 and showing covenant faithfulness to a thousand
generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. (net bible)
7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold guiltless anyone who
takes his name in vain. (NET)
20:1–2 To start with self-identification, as the Lord
does here, was normal for a covenant document sent from a king and for royal
proclamations and inscriptions. Delivering the Israelites had become part of
his identity, what people should think of when his name was mentioned. In the
ancient Near East, Israel’s system of laws was unique in that it came from God
and obedience or disobedience was oriented toward God; elsewhere rulers might
present laws to a deity for approval, but the laws themselves were not given by
the deity. In Israel, lawbreaking was first of all an offense against the Lord,
not just a disruption of order or an offense against other people.
