4:13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength. (NIV)

4:13 ALL THINGS. Paul is referring to what he has just described: his ability to exist in all types of material circumstances—wealth or poverty, abundant food or no food, etc. THROUGH HIM WHO STRENGTHENS ME. The source of Paul’s ability to exist successfully in all circumstances is his union with Christ. This is his secret.

Lyman Coleman, ed., Life Connections Study Bible (Nashville, TN: Holman Bibles, 2019), 1900.

4:13 All things refers to the economic fluctuations of life (v. 12). Through him who strengthens me teaches that Christ empowers believers to live in God’s will. Paradoxically, Paul was strong when he was weak; independent only when dependent. Such is the life of a disciple.

Dear Heavenly Father, I am grateful for the gift of faith that you have bestowed upon me, and for the spiritual union that I share with Jesus Christ. Thank you for providing me with the strength to overcome any circumstance or situation that I may encounter. Please draw me closer to you each day, and strengthen me to face every challenge with unwavering faith and determination. I ask that you continue to guide me on my spiritual journey, and help me to grow ever closer to you. I pray all of this in Jesus' name, Amen.

Don't be frightened, for I am your God! I strengthen you— yes, I help you— yes, I uphold you with my victorious right hand. (NET)

41:10 I am with you. God’s presence with his people in the world is the ultimate antidote to fear (cf. 43:5; Gen 26:24; Josh 1:9; see note on 7:14, “Immanuel”). righteous right hand. The hand that can be trusted to do the right thing in every circumstance. God will not do wrong; so he acted righteously when he sent the people into exile. And it will also be an act of righteousness for him to deliver them (42:21; 45:21).

D. A. Carson, ed., NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2018), 1236.

41:10 Fear thou not. The gospel calls men from fear to faith (vv. 13–14; 7:4; 35:4; 43:1, 5; 44:2, 8; 54:4; Jer. 30:10; 46:27–28). I am with thee. God is present with believers through Christ (7:14) to enable them to keep His covenant (thy God); this includes His promise to strengthen and help them in their troubles (Ps. 91:15).

Joel R. Beeke, Michael P. V. Barrett, and Gerald M. Bilkes, eds., The Reformation Heritage KJV Study Bible (Grand Rapids, MI: Reformation Heritage Books, 2014), 1002.

I want to thank you for your word of faith and courage, which has provided me with comfort and strength during times of fear and uncertainty about the present and future. I have faith that you are always with me, and that Jesus Christ is spiritually united with me. I trust that you have guided me on the best path in accordance with your will and purpose and that you have provided me with the strength I need to overcome any obstacle. Please continue to guide me and give me the courage to live each day with faith and strength, trusting in your plan and purpose for my life. I pray all of this in Jesus' name, Amen.

요한일서 5:13 내가 하나님의 아들의 이름을 믿는 너희에게 이것을 쓰는 것은 너희로 하여금 너희에게 영생이 있음을 알게 하려 함이라 (개역개정) 5:13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. (NIV)

5:13 This verse parallels Jn 20:31 which is the concluding verse of the gospel. John wrote his gospel in order to witness about Jesus and so inspire faith in those who did not yet know Christ. By believing in Jesus, they would discover “life.” His purpose in the letter is similar, except that now his words are directed to those who have, in fact, come to believe in Jesus. His purpose is no longer to tell them how to find “life” but, instead, to assure them that they do have eternal life.

Lyman Coleman, ed., Life Connections Study Bible (Nashville, TN: Holman Bibles, 2019), 1994.

eternal life. This does not refer primarily to a period of time but a person (v. 20; Jn 17:3). Eternal life is a relationship with the person of Jesus Christ and possessing His nature (as in vv. 11, 12).

John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006),

Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for bringing me comfort when I am tired and lost. Your word provides me with the strength and conviction to carry on. Thank you for uniting me with Jesus Christ and for the abundant life that he offers. Please help me understand my true identity and guide me to live courageously as one of your children. I pray all of this in the name of Jesus. Amen.

갈라디아서 2:20 내가 그리스도와 함께 십자가에 못 박혔나니 그런즉  이제는 내가 사는 것이 아니요 오직 내 안에 그리스도께서 사시는 것이라 이제 내가 육체 가운데 사는 것은 나를 사랑하사 나를 위하여 자기 자신을 버리신 하나님의 아들을 믿는 믿음 안에서 사는 것이라 (개역개정) 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So60 the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. (NET)

2:20 salvation, As Being in Christ—The best commentary on this text may be Jn 15:1–17. Being in Christ is tied inseparably and mystically to our radical union with Christ in his death and resurrection. It is a life lived by faith in the Son of God. We let Christ direct our thoughts and actions. We bury selfish interests in the interest of Christ.

Holman Bible Publishers, CSB Disciple’s Study Bible: Notes (Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers, 2017), 1818.

The hope of new life is freedom from bondage to sin. Before we believed in Christ, our nature was evil. We disobeyed, rebelled, and ignored God (even at our best, we did not love him with all our heart, soul, and mind). The Christian, however, has a new nature. God has crucified the old, rebellious nature (Romans 6:6) and replaced it with a new, loving nature (3:9–10). The penalty of sin died with Christ on the cross. God has declared us not guilty, and we need no longer live under sin’s power. God does not take us out of the world or make us robots—we will still feel like sinning, and sometimes we will sin. The difference is that before we were saved, we were slaves to our sinful nature; but now we are free to live for Christ (see Galatians 2:20).

Neil S. Wilson, The Handbook of Bible Application (Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc., 2000), 427.

Heavenly Father, I am grateful for your amazing grace and for Jesus who sacrificed himself to save me. I thank you for the Holy Spirit who unites me with Jesus spiritually through faith. Thank you for giving me an eternal purpose in life and guiding me on the path of faith. I want to put my trust in Jesus, rely on him, and follow him. Please continue to guide me on this journey of faith. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
