14:19 and he blessed Abram, saying, "Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. 14:20 And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand." Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

14:19 Creator of heaven and earth. Melchizedek’s description of God implies that God is more than simply the creator of everything. He is also its possessor, a striking affirmation in the light of the human conflict over territory in the opening part of this chapter. Rejecting God’s ownership of the earth lies at the heart of human sin.

D. A. Carson, ed., NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2018), 47.

7:17 I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness and will sing praise to the name of the LORD Most High.

7:17 Most High (Hb ‘elyon) as a title for God first occurs in Gn 14:18–22, but it is also used throughout the OT to emphasize God’s sovereignty over all humanity (Dt 32:8; Ps 47:2; Dn 4:17).

Kevin R. Warstler, “Psalms,” in CSB Study Bible: Notes, ed. Edwin A. Blum and Trevin Wax (Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers, 2017), 823.

92:1 A psalm. A song. For the Sabbath day. It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name, O Most High, 92:2 여호와여 주께서 행하신 일로 나를 기쁘게 하셨으니 주의 손이 행하신 일로 말미암아 내가 높이 외치리이다 92:2 to proclaim your love in the morning and your faithfulness at night, 92:3 여호와여 주께서 행하신 일이 어찌 그리 크신지요 주의 생각이 매우 깊으시니이다 92:3 to the music of the ten-stringed lyre and the melody of the harp.

92:1–4 To give thanks means “to give public acknowledgment” or to praise God verbally in a public setting (35:18; 105:1).

Earl D. Radmacher, Ronald Barclay Allen, and H. Wayne House, The Nelson Study Bible: New King James Version (Nashville: T. Nelson Publishers, 1997), Ps 92:1–4.

97:9 For you, O LORD, are the Most High over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.

97:9 People in the ancient Near East believed the gods belonged to the realm of the heavens, but here Yahweh is depicted as even above the place where they dwelled (compare note on v. 5).

John D. Barry, Douglas Mangum, Derek R. Brown, et al., Faithlife Study Bible (Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2012, 2016), Ps 97:9.

4:34 At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever. His dominion is an eternal dominion; his kingdom endures from generation to generation.

4:34, 35, 37 The Lord demonstrates in Nebuchadnezzar’s life that He is able to humble the proud and to exalt the humble, leading Nebuchadnezzar to acknowledge His greatness.

R. C. Sproul, ed., The Reformation Study Bible: English Standard Version (2015 Edition) (Orlando, FL: Reformation Trust, 2015), 1472–1473.

There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand. (NIV)

32:39 and there is not a god besides me The other inferior gods (v. 17) are incomparable to Yahweh (see 4:35, 39; compare Psa 82). No other deity can control events and has power over life and death.

John D. Barry, Douglas Mangum, Derek R. Brown, et al., Faithlife Study Bible (Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2012, 2016), Dt 32:39.

10:17 For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.

10:17 The phrase God of gods does not affirm the existence of other gods; rather, it affirms God’s absolute sovereignty over all powers in heaven and earth. The Hebrew ʾelohim, translated gods, can also refer to angels or other powerful beings (see Ps 82:1).

New Living Translation Study Bible (Carol Stream, IL: Tyndale House Publishers, Inc., 2008), Dt 10:17.

10:17 accepts no bribes. In ancient Near Eastern religion, gods could be manipulated because they had needs. By providing food, clothing and shelter for the god, an individual could win favor. Yahweh here makes it clear that he will not distort justice for personal gain.

Craig S. Keener and John H. Walton, eds., NIV Cultural Backgrounds Study Bible: Bringing to Life the Ancient World of Scripture (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2016), 314.

16:2 I said to the LORD, "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing."

2 The psalmist approaches God as “my Lord” (Adonai) and as “my good” (NIV, “I have no good thing”). The designation “my Lord” reveals the psalmist’s submission to him as “Master” and “Ruler” (see 8:1), in contrast to those who run after other gods (v. 4).

Willem A. VanGemeren, “Psalms,” in The Expositor’s Bible Commentary: Psalms (Revised Edition), ed. Tremper Longman III and David E. Garland, vol. 5 (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2008), 187.

16:2 apart from you The psalmist finds contentment and sufficiency in Yahweh. The psalmist of Psalm 73 makes a similar statement in response to the prosperity of the wicked (73:25).

John D. Barry et al., Faithlife Study Bible (Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2012, 2016), Ps 16:2.

10:9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

10:9 confess … Jesus as Lord. Not a simple acknowledgment that He is God and the Lord of the universe, since even demons acknowledge that to be true (Jas 2:19). This is the deep personal conviction, without reservation, that Jesus is that person’s own master or sovereign. This phrase includes repenting from sin, trusting in Jesus for salvation, and submitting to Him as Lord. This is the volitional element of faith.

John F. MacArthur Jr., The MacArthur Study Bible: New American Standard Bible. (Nashville, TN: Thomas Nelson Publishers, 2006), Ro 10:9.

14:8 If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 14:9 For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.

14:8 we die for the Lord Indicates that in all things, the believer’s purpose is to serve and please God.

we are the Lord’s Paul affirms that neither life nor death can adversely affect the believer’s union with Christ (see Rom 8:35; 1 Thess 5:10).

John D. Barry et al., Faithlife Study Bible (Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2012, 2016), Ro 14:8.

14:4–9 jesus christ, Lord—As Lord, Jesus Christ not only rules over us. He provides needed strength for our weaknesses. Life is lived in relationship to the risen Lord and his will for us not in relationship to the opinions and judgments of other people. Only he earned the right to be our Lord through his death and resurrection.

Holman Bible Publishers, CSB Disciple’s Study Bible: Notes (Nashville, TN: Holman Bible Publishers, 2017), 1746.

2:9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 2:10 하늘에 있는 자들과 땅에 있는 자들과 땅 아래에 있는 자들로 모든 무릎을 예수의 이름에 꿇게 하시고 2:10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 2:11 모든 입으로 예수 그리스도를 주라 시인하여 하나님 아버지께 영광을 돌리게 하셨느니라 (개역개정) 2:11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (NIV)

the name that is above every name. This is the “name”—that is, the title—“Lord,” conferred on the Jesus the Messiah in His exaltation in recognition of His complete obedience in His redemptive mission from the Father (Acts 2:36; Eph. 1:21). The God-man is shown to be more than worthy to be called Lord because He successfully accomplished His mission to bring salvation, and so His humanity shares in the glory and honor that He is due.

2:8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself," you are doing right. 2:9 만일 너희가 사람을 차별하여 대하면 죄를 짓는 것이니 율법이 너희를 범법자로 정죄하리라 (개역개정) 2:9 But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. (NIV)

2:8 royal law. The law of love (see Lev 19:18 and note) is called “royal” likely because it is the “kingdom” law drawn from Jesus’ teachings about the kingdom of God. The royal law is the summation of all other laws (see Mt 22:36–40; Ro 13:8–10 and notes on 13:8–9). It is also the law of the kingdom, since “royal” could also be translated “kingly.”

Kenneth L. Barker, ed., NIV Study Bible, Fully Revised Edition. (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2020), 2181–2182.

2:8 andreas: Just as you want to be treated justly and properly by your neighbor, so you must behave toward him as you would towards your kinsman and child of God. What our Savior said about this is absolutely right: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. For this is the law and the prophets” [see Mt 7:12]. catena.

James Stuart Bell, ed., Ancient Faith Study Bible (Nashville, TN: Holman Bibles, 2019), 1543.

Heavenly Father, my desire is to follow the word of my Lord with a sincere heart. I want to love my neighbor as I love myself. Although this world has favoritism according to someone's condition, I want to live with Your Word to overcome it. I pray in the name of Jesus, Amen.
