5:4 thanksgiving. An acknowledgment of our dependence on God and our grateful response to God’s gift of redemption, recognizing that he is the source of every blessing. Such an attitude corrects the self-serving focus found in the preceding vices of sexual immorality, greed, and obscene speech. See v. 20; 1 Thess 5:18. 감사하는 말이라는 것은, 우리가 하나님께 의존하고 있음을 인식하고, 그분께서 모든 축복의 근원이 되심을 인정하며, 하나님의 구원의 선물에 감사로 반응하는 것입니다. 이러한 태도가, 이 말씀 앞에 등장하는 성적인 부도덕, 탐욕, 음탕한 말이라는 나에게만 초점을 맞추는 이기적인 삶을 바로 잡아 주는 것입니다.

5:4 not fitting. These 3 inappropriate sins of
the tongue include any speech that is obscene and degrading or foolish and
dirty, as well as suggestive and immoral. All such are destructive of holy
living and godly testimony and should be confessed, forsaken, and replaced by
open expressions of thankfulness to God (cf. Col 3:8). 마땅치 아니하니 : 이 세가지의 혀로 부터 나오는 온당하지 않은 세가지의 죄는, 음란한, 비하하는, 그리고 더럽고 외설적이고 부도덕한 말이 포함됩니다. 모든 이러한 것들은 거룩한 삶과 경건한 간증을 파괴합니다. 그러므로 이러한 잘못을 고백하고 버려야 하며, 오히려 하나님께 대한 공개적인 공적인 감사의 표현들로 채워져야 합니다.
